Dynamic duo: Wahoo Directors Janine and Pete talk about balancing work and life

Work and life

After hearing that more than 30% of employees feel that a positive work and life balance is one of the top reasons why they stay in their jobs, we decided to sit down and have a heart-to-heart with Wahoo Directors, Janine and Pete to get their advice on balancing work and life… and find out what their favourite travel destinations are!

What do you like doing in your free time?

PETE: I’ve discovered golf later in life. Best described as an ‘enthusiastic hacker’.

JANINE: Morning walks with my Staffies around the lake we live on, boot camp, weekends at home with my fiance (avoiding the M1), cooking and catching up with friends.

What is the best piece of advice you have received in relation to balancing work and life?

PETE: Don’t take yourself too seriously. Both aspects of your life should be enjoyable.

JANINE:  Balance is not something you find, it’s something you create. It’s not about working harder, but working smarter.  Don’t spend too much time on what’s urgent, and not enough time on what’s important.

What is one destination everyone should add to their travel bucket list?

PETE: Definitely Vietnam.

JANINE: Maldives is on mine, and I’ll be ticking that off next year for my honeymoon.

What is your favourite “life hack” in balancing your personal and professional life?

PETE: Have a couple of clients as friends.

JANINE: Schedule in your diary time for family and friends. No matter how busy you are, or how busy you think you are, the work will always be there tomorrow, but your family and friends might not be.

What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?

PETE: Not to be too impatient – good things happen but they take time.

JANINE: Never stop learning or listening. Enjoy what you do, or change it, the choice is always yours.  And never be so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.

What is your favourite thing to do to wind down after a stressful day at work?

PETE: Watching travel and cooking shows. Don’t do enough of either though.

JANINE: At home on the back deck enjoying the beautiful view of the lake and a wine or two with my fiancé, the perfect destress after any day.

How do you support your staff in achieving work/life balance?

PETE: We try and keep staff to working regular hours. Sure there can be late nights but we try and minimise them.

JANINE: Flexibility is key to a good work life balance, a little give and take goes a long way. We try and keep to standard office hours and finish a bit earlier on Fridays, who doesn’t love an early start to the weekend. Happy people are the most productive and positive people.
