How to navigate social media marketing in 2020

With more than 3.2 billion users across a diverse range of digital platforms, 2020 brings more opportunity than ever to reach customers online. BUT with all of that opportunity, comes a whole lot of competition. With more businesses popping up on social media every day, standing out can feel overwhelming and to be totally honest, sometimes really hard to achieve. We get it. That’s why we’re sharing our 3 biggest tips to keep your social channels engaging for your audience AND stress-free for you to manage.

1. WORK ON YOUR SOCIAL CONTENT ONCE A MONTH (NOT ONCE A DAY!)

Whether you’re a solo operation or have a team working on your social, make the time to sit down, plan and schedule your social content once a month.

Bulking and segmenting your workload isn’t a new concept to the productive and efficient. Rather than creating and posting content day by day, spend 5 hours, once a month getting creative and planning your content

2. FOCUS ON THE METRICS THAT MATTER (LEAVE VANITY METRICS IN 2019!)

Just in case you missed it, in 2019 Instagram got rid of their ‘likes’ feature, and for good reason. They are a total vanity metric.

When it comes to measuring your content, don’t sweat the small stuff. Focus on the metrics that mean the most to you and your brand. For example, if you are using social media as a tool to grow your email database list or generate pre-sales for a new product, focus on your conversion rates and which platforms are driving the most traffic to convert.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey recently said that follower counts are now meaningless. In fact, in a recent TED Talk he even said that if he could go back in time, he wouldn’t emphasize the metric value of the “like” button.

3. GET CREATIVE WITH VIDEO CONTENT (AND EXPLORE NEW VIDEO SHARING PLATFORMS!)

Video is, in our opinion, the most effective way to engage your customers online. Actually, it seems as though most marketers would agree.

Hubspot’s recent data around video marketing tells us that 99% of marketers are planning to continue their video use to connect with customers, and 95% plan to increase their video spend in 2020.

So, with this in mind, here are a few video sharing platforms to explore and conquer this year. *Tip: start with one platform, do it well and then expand from there. Don’t exhaust yourself trying to get it all done at once.

Instagram. If you’re in eCommerce, then you need to be on Instagram. Stats tell us that 83% of people use Instagram to discover new products and services AND 80% of people use it as a purchase decision tool.

TikTok. This is the newest kid on the block and they are taking the world by storm with over 500 million active users. This video sharing platform is all about creativity. Think lip syncing, comedy, dancing and talent videos.

YouTube. The OG of video sharing. YouTube is the perfect value-add platform to any marketing campaign. Whether it’s a how-to on using your product or service or an influencer collaboration, it’s a casual way to share information and educate your customers without the hard sales push.
